THE SHRINKING PRESIDENCY OF DONALD TRUMP

It has only taken President Donald Trump six months to become almost irrelevant.
Because of his total lack of knowledge of government and his complete lack of interest in knowing or caring about legislation he supposedly supports, both Houses of Congress realize he is totally out of his depth as president.
His erratic behavior and his joyless view of the world and his bizarre, weird almost hourly tweets make him mainly an embarrassment as leader of America and the free world.
He lies. There is no other way to say it about the 45h president of the United States. From the size of his inaugural crowd to his phony voter fraud to his recent weird tweet about John Podesta in the middle of the G20 Hamburg summit to his constant criticism of the media, he is becoming almost predictable in his attempt to be the rebel at the table. He opposes or takes opposite views, not because he believes in anything, because it seems he doesn’t believe in anything but himself, but mainly to be a pest who hopes to be on the news.
Our 45th president seems to spend most of his days and nights watching television which is very odd. It seems he might have more to do like getting a tax reform bill, an infrastructure bill and a health care bill through Congress.
President Lyndon Johnson had television sets installed in the White House so he could watch all three network news broadcasts. But, Johnson knew how Congress worked and passed significant domestic legislation during his presidency.
Our 45th president has become predictable in what he sees as his unpredictable behavior. His behavior most of the time would qualify for a “time-out” if he were a child.
His lack of concern for a free media-in fact just the opposite-is one of the most troubling aspects of his troubling administration. Putting out a tweet where he is beating up a wrestler with a CNN logo is just plain mean spirited and a call for violence against journalists.
When I was editor in chief of EUROPE magazine for the European Commission, I remember all the world leaders attending G8, G20 and European summits, always gave press briefings after the summits were done.
After the recent G20 in Hamburg, Germany Trump gets on his plane and flies home without comments to the media. Meanwhile, Russian President Putin and his Foreign Minister both spoke to the media and gave their views of their bilateral meeting.
The American delegation has our Secretary of State speak only on audio, as if it is the 1950s, in order to discuss the Trump-Putin meeting.
It is so bizarre and beyond any normal sense of real world thinking, that our 45th president is so enamored of Russia and Russian president Putin. I know Trump never reads so maybe he never heard of something called the Cold War. Maybe he doesn’t know what a terrible thug Putin is in the real world.
For some unknown reason, Trump seems to need and want Putin’s acceptance and blessing. Does Trump not know how Putin has journalists murdered, invades Ukraine and is no fan of human rights?
Trump’s blind spot towards Russia is pathetic. He never, ever says anything negative about Russia. And, President Trump they are not our allies or friend, they are America’s enemy.
Trump says he was “honored” to meet the Russian thug president. Former CIA Director John Brennan said, “He said it’s an honor to meet the individual who carried out the assault on our election. To me it’s a dishonorable thing to say.” Brennan went on to say Trump “ceded” ground to Putin.
Former presidential advisor David Gergen, discussing the G20 Hamburg summit, stated, “Trump is no longer regarded as the world leader.”
Trump, as he grows more isolated and irrelevant on the domestic and world stage, seems to take some weird pride on being the bad boy of domestic and world politics. If 19 of the 20 G20 nations want to seriously fight climate change, Trump will be the one against it. If 19 of 20 nations want to have free trade, Trump will be looking at protectionist policies for steel and other imports.
Since Trump’s only concern seems to be making money and criticizing anyone who disagrees with him, it seems apparent that the 45th president will continue to become more and more irrelevant as his administration slowly slips away into obscurity.
We will, most likely, find after years of scandal and mean spirited tweets that Russia has something on Trump and this will lead to a constitutional crisis. Follow the money and you will understand Trump. Did he get a loan from a Russian sanctioned bank or a billionaire Russian oligarch.
Trump will drive us all through the mud over the next three and a half years being his despicable self, embarrassing the country, ruining the Republican brand and most likely not accomplishing much at all except for praising himself.
It is a truly remarkable, not to say sad, time for America and the world to have this incompetent braggart residing in the White House—residing on those days he is not playing golf at one of clubs nearby or in Florida.
This summer I am teaching a course on the American Presidency at the University of Virginia, and can truthfully say, America has never had such an incompetent, know-nothing, joyless, unsympathetic president.
Richard Nixon also railed against the media along with his VP Spiro Agnew but Agnew was forced to resign and later on Nixon resigned due to his Watergate cover-up. Even Nixon, who was one of our worst presidents, looks better now than Trump.
Buchanan, Millard Fillmore, Jimmy Carter, Coolidge, Hoover and others are ranked as some of our worst presidents but they are all looking better when compared to our 45th president.
And, finally Trump sees no punishment for Russia for trying to hack away at our democracy. He is so thin-skinned that he only cares about whether or not it might make his presidency seem illegitimate. Trump doesn’t care about American democracy, coal miners, or the disabled who will be without benefits if a GOP health care bill makes it though the House and Senate.
Trump proposes an idiotic, insane cyber security partnering with Russia! They are the bad guys. You don’t partner with the bad guys who are doing the hacking.
Trump’s anti-media rantings have to stop before a journalist or two gets hurt by one of Trump’s supporters. Trump is a creature of the media. He lives to be mentioned on the media. As mentioned, he watches the media day and night. What a hypocrite to add to his other bad qualities.
Our spoiled brat know nothing 45th president will continue his charade as America’s president but he is slowly shrinking before our very eyes. He is becoming more and more irrelevant every day.
And, the reason for his bizarre fawning behavior towards Putin and Russia will be discovered, and Trump will bring more disgrace upon himself.
The 45th presidency cannot shrink away fast enough!
